Origin
The Miniature Pinscher is a distinctly German breed commonly referred to as the Zwerg or Dwarf Pinscher in historic documents. German Kennel Club documents even referred to it as a "reh" Pinscher, but this was only given to dogs of stag-red color as they resembled the reh deer, a small forest dwelling deer found in Germany years ago. It's origins date back many centuries.
Historic artifacts and paintings date the breed as a very old breed but documentation only goes back less then 200 years. Leaving the origins of the breed a major topic of debate.

American Influence
Until the early 1900's the breeds popularity was primarily in German & Scandanavian countries. But quickly gained popularity in the U.S. Since the first one was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1925 where it was classified in the Terrier Group, until it was reclassified to the Toy Group in 1930. The name was changed from Toy Pinscher to Miniature Pinscher in 1972.
Purpose & Breeding
The Miniature Pinscher is NOT a scaled down version of anything in particular, especially the commonly thought of, much larger Doberman Pinscher. It is believed that they both have a common ancestor in the German Standard Pinscher. It is also reportedly to have dachshund and italian greyhound ancestors. And many breed historians and researchers believe they may have added the Short-haired German Pinscher in the lineage as well.
The Miniature Pinscher was bred to be an effective barnyard ratter with no relation the large Doberman Pinscher or the smaller Manchester Terrier. Today it is mainly a companion but still contains its terrier-like ratting tendencies seen in its tenacious and strong personality.
